William Wallace 1274-1305
    Made famous by the film historically inaccurate Braveheart, he was Born in Elderslie, near. Along with Andrew Murray he led the Scots resistance against the English occupation at the beginning of the Wars of Independence.
    They defeated the English army led by The Earl of Surrey at the Battle O’ Stirlin’ Brig. Hugh de Cressingham was the hated treasurer for the English in Scotland at that time. He was killed and his body was flayed by the Scots.  The Lanercost Chronicles states that “the Scots dried and cured his hide.“
    William Wallace became Guardian of Scotland but was eventually betrayed by Sir John Mentieth (1275-1323) and executed at Smithfield in London. There is a monument to Wallace near Stirling.
    Braveheart starred Mel Gibson Sophie Marceau, Patrick McGoohan (As Edward 1st.  Longshanks), Catherine McCormack, James Robinson, Sean Lawlor, Sandy Nelson, James Cosmo, Sean McGinley, Ralph Riach, and well known Edinburgh singer Tam White had a wee part too.
