John Knox was the
leader of the Church of Scotland during the Reformation in December
1560. Born in Haddington, East Lothian his father fought at
Flodden and
John Calvin influenced him. John
Knox’s house is on The Royal Mile, Edinburgh and is open to the public.
There are two statues in Edinburgh: inside Ediniburgh Univesity School
of Divinity
New College and
St. Giles Cathedral.
A significant moment in his life was in 1547 and his
capture at
St. Andrews by
the French and enslavement in the French galleys for a year and half,
which affected his health for the rest of his life.
He often came into conflict with the Catholic Mary
Queen of Scots and in modern times has been accused of being a
misogynist, particularly because of his book “
The First
Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women”
His first wife Marjorie had two sons to him.
She died and Knox eventually married the daughter of his friend Andrew
Stewart. His new wife was 17. He was 50. They had three daughters.
