Flora Macdonald 1722-1790
South Uist born in the Western Isles, she
sheltered Bonnie Prince Charlie during his escape through the Highlands
and Islands of Scotland. He was disguised as and Irish maid, Betty
Burke, when he had a price on his head of £30,000 (Equivalent to
£1 million pounds in today‘s money).
She emigrated to North Carolina and then
returned to Scotland in 1778.
The last words of Bonnie Prine Charlie to
Flora MacDonald, after she risked her life for him, were "Many
thanks."
