Known as the
Young Pretender and born in Rome, Italy, he was the grandson of James
VII of Scotland and II of England. With the help of the French, he
encouraged a minority of the clans to rise and seek the Crown of Great
Britain and Ireland. The 1745 Jacobite rebellion took occupied
Edinburgh and won the Battle of Prestonpans. They continued on and
reached Derby before turning back. There is a statue to him in Derby.
The rebellion ended at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.
After Culloden he escaped to other parts of
the Highlands and Islands before returning to France. He died a
disillusioned alcoholic in Rome; thus ending the reign of the Stewart
Kings.
